The University of Georgia Skidaway Institute of Oceanography is an oceanographic research laboratory located on a natural, 700-acre campus on a coastal island in suburban Savannah. Its mission and activities are a combination of cutting-edge marine research and research-based education. Skidaway Institute scientists conduct their research anywhere from the marshes adjoining the campus to the farthest reaches of the globe.
While primarily a research institution, Skidaway Institute also provides students with research-based educational opportunities not available at a land-locked campus. Students range from undergraduate interns who may be on campus for an internship lasting several weeks or months, to PhD students who may be in residence here for several years. These students come from the University of Georgia, as well as other schools around the country and internationally.
